Hell, It's About Time

Big news in gaming today. Blizzard finally reveals the reason behind their recent site change, displaying a time line of their games' releases: STARCRAFT II. This is a huge announcement, the sequel to one of the most popular video games of all time. The original Starcraft was released back in 1998, almost ten years ago now, and it was absolutely amazing. I think the best sign that this game was and still is one of the best and most played games ever is that I could walk into any Gamestop store right now and find a brand new copy of the Starcraft Battle Chest on the shelf. Blizzard has been not only supporting and maintaining the game for ten years, but still producing new copies for sale. As long as PC gaming exists, Starcraft will be a major facet of it.
Now, they show us that development on Starcraft II is well underway. The sequel to one of the biggest games ever. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill, and a lot of incredibly hardcore fans to appease. They will need to put more work into this game than possibly any they have made yet. It's a delicate thing to be working on a new incarnation of something that so many people will expect so much out of. I have faith in Blizzard; every game they've released has been ridiculously popular (WoW, possibly?) and I know that they work to make their games excellent, not just another release to make a quick few bucks. But I imagine that when Starcraft II comes out, this will be either the greatest thing gaming has seen since the original, or the most depressing flop for a game franchise ever. And I'm sure that there will be die hard fans on both sides of that line, fighting to the death over it.
